Mariska Hargitay shares courtside chic glam on Instagram. Instagram

Mariska Hargitay recently made headlines after appearing courtside at a New York Knicks game, but behind the actress is a family story worthy of the silver screen itself.

Best known as Detective Olivia Benson on Law & Order: SVU, Hargitay comes from one of entertainment's most fascinating family legacies. The actress is the daughter of 1950s bombshell Jayne Mansfield and bodybuilder-turned-actor Mickey Hargitay. The two larger-than-life figures lived a love story that captivated Hollywood long before Mariska was born and stepped into the spotlight herself.

Today, Mariska Hargitay continues the Hollywood legacy while honouring her parents' through her career, her family, and her 2025 documentary film titled My Mom Jayne.

A Bombshell Before the Big Influencer Bang

Long before celebrity culture became a social media phenomenon, there was Jayne Mansfield who shined as one of Hollywood's brightest stars.

Famous for her glamorous image, platinum blonde hair, and flamboyant personality, Mansfield became one of the most recognisable faces of the 1950s and 1960s. The actress, singer, and Playboy Playmate was widely regarded as one of Hollywood's defining sex symbols. She starred in films including The Girl Can't Help It, Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?, and The Wayward Bus, making her mark in the Golden Age of cinema.

While she was often compared to Marilyn Monroe, Mansfield proved there was room for more than one charming blonde bombshell in Hollywood. Her sharp wit, comedic talent, and charismatic personality helped her bring her own seat at a crowded table of screen sirens.

Nevertheless, there was far more to her than her bombshell persona. Talking to People.com, Mariska Hargitay has been vocal about her mother's intelligence, noting that Mansfield played the violin, reportedly had an IQ of 160, loved dogs, and balanced a successful career with raising five children.

In recent years, Hargitay has worked to show audiences the woman behind the headlines, a journey that inspired her documentary 'My Mom Jayne'. Apart from the acting bug, it's no secret that Mariska has inherited some very attractive genes from her iconic mother.

Origin Story: 'I'll Have the Steak and the Man on the Left'

Few Hollywood love stories begin with a line quite as memorable as this one.

After winning the title of Mr. Universe in 1955, Mickey Hargitay joined actress Mae West's Las Vegas revue as one of its famous musclemen. According to reports, Jayne Mansfield attended one of the performances and, when asked what she would like, famously replied: 'I'll have the steak and the man on the left.'

The 'man on the left' was Mickey Hargitay.

The pair married in 1958 and quickly became one of Hollywood's most talked-about couples. Together, they created the legendary 'Pink Palace', a lavish Beverly Hills mansion filled with heart-shaped details and grand romantic gestures. Mickey even built Jayne a heart-shaped swimming pool with the words 'I Love You Jaynie' written across the bottom tiles.

Hollywood Royalty: Legacy Onwards

Years later, becoming a mother herself helped Mariska Hargitay develop an even deeper understanding of Jayne. Hargitay now shares three children with her husband, actor Peter Hermann. The Law & Order: SVU actress has spoken openly about how parenthood helped her feel closer to the mother she knew only until she was three years old.

In 2025, Hargitay revealed new details about her family history through 'My Mom Jayne', including the discovery that entertainer Nelson Sardelli is her biological father. Despite the revelation, she has remained steadfast in describing Mickey Hargitay as her true father.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, she mentioned that she is in contact with the Sardelli side of her family, but still considers the man who raised her as her father. 'I'm Mickey Hargitay's daughter', she shares. 'That is not a lie.'

While Jayne Mansfield and Mickey Hargitay built one of Hollywood's most legendary romances, their greatest legacy may be the daughter who continues to honour both of them today.
