Ralph Lauren opened New York Fashion Week's Spring/Summer 2027 season with a collection addressing a longstanding fashion debate, as the event enters its first official fur-free season.
The 86-year-old designer presented his Spring 2027 collection at Jack Shainman Gallery in Manhattan on Wednesday, 9 September, blending his signature American sportswear with youthful, sensual, and historically inspired designs.
Navy blue and white formed the collection's foundation, complemented by beige, gold, and dusty rose. Tailored trousers paired with leather jackets, boater hats, ballet slippers, and red-carpet-ready gowns completed the lineup.
The label described the collection as an effort to upend 'traditional notions of chic' and rework historical silhouettes. Viola Davis, Ariana DeBose and Wicked star Cynthia Erivo were among the celebrities in the front row.
NYFW's First Fur-Free Season
This season is the first time collections on the official New York Fashion Week schedule are presented under the Council of Fashion Designers of America's (CFDA) fur ban, announced on 3 December 2025.
The policy covers fur from animals farmed or trapped for their pelts but exempts fur Indigenous communities obtain through traditional subsistence hunting.
The change aligns New York with other fur-free fashion weeks, such as those in London, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Helsinki, Stockholm, Melbourne, and Berlin.
The Debate Over Fur in Fashion
The policy follows years of animal-welfare advocacy and PETA campaigns, reflecting a broader societal move away from animal fur.
The organisation held its first naked protest at an Oscar de la Renta runway show in 1991, where supporters were handcuffed to a banner reading, 'We'd Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur'. The protest later appeared on the cover of The New York Times.
PETA continued its campaigns in subsequent years, featuring celebrities such as Pamela Anderson, Taraji P. Henson, Wendy Williams, and Pink.
The organisation reported that fur farming supplies 85 per cent of the industry's skins, often keeping animals in cramped cages and poor conditions.
It also raised concerns about fur processing, which uses chemicals to prevent decomposition and has been linked to toxic pollution. The World Bank ranks fur dressing among industries with high toxic-metal pollution.
China is the world's largest exporter of fur garments. Animal-welfare groups have documented the use of dogs and cats for fur in China and allege that their skins are sometimes mislabelled as those of other species.
Argued by Vogue as fashion's biggest model, Gisele Bündchen was an early advocate for the shift. She later explained to the magazine how her experience with fur campaigns changed her perspective.
'I was in the hamster wheel: I'm just going to go out there and be a good girl and do what my agent tells me to do. What do I know?' she said.
'It wasn't until that shock—it stopped me in my tracks. They sent me all these videos. I wasn't aware of what was happening, and I was devastated. So I said, "Listen, I'm not doing fur campaigns".'
Ralph Lauren opened the new season after reporting a 15 per cent increase in fiscal 2026 revenue, surpassing £5.9 billion ($8 billion) for the first time. The brand's show took place one day before the official New York Fashion Week calendar, which runs from 10 to 15 September.
The schedule will feature about 70 collections, with Henry Zankov making his debut as artistic director at Diane von Furstenberg on Thursday.
Other shows include Proenza Schouler, Christian Siriano, Tory Burch, and Tommy Hilfiger. Michael Kors and Calvin Klein will show on Friday, Carolina Herrera on Monday, and Thom Browne on Tuesday.
