A bear on top of a pole quickly became one of the internet's most talked about wildlife moments, but the bizarre sight ended in tragedy. Wildlife officials said the bear later died after being electrocuted, adding that members of the public repeatedly stopping to film may have kept the frightened animal stranded high above the ground.
The incident unfolded in rural New Mexico, where motorists were stunned to spot the bear balancing on a 35 foot utility pole. While thousands watched the viral footage online, officials faced a rescue situation with very few safe options.
Drivers Could Not Believe Their Eyes
The unusual encounter happened near Gladstone, New Mexico, when Shannon Mullens was travelling from Red River to Oklahoma with her family. At first, they believed the dark shape sitting on the utility pole was a dead animal.
After turning around for a closer look, they realised the bear was still alive and clinging to the wooden crossarm. Mullens captured the remarkable scene on video as the exhausted animal panted while trying to keep its balance several metres above the ground.
Emergency Call Brought Little Hope
Concerned by what she had seen, a 911 caller reported that there was 'a bear on top of a light pole'. The dispatcher replied that wildlife officials had already been informed but explained there was very little they could safely do.
According to the emergency operator, using a tranquilliser while the bear remained high above the ground could have caused it to fall, creating an even greater danger for both the animal and rescuers. That left officials waiting for an opportunity that sadly never came.
Crowds Gathered as the Bear Stayed Put
As footage of the stranded bear spread online, more motorists reportedly stopped beside the road to watch, film and take photographs. Officials later suggested this constant activity may have stopped the frightened bear from climbing back down.
The New Mexico Department of Fish and Wildlife said members of the public continued gathering near the utility pole, meaning the bear remained where it was instead of attempting to escape. Although officials did not say the crowds directly caused the animal's death, they indicated the attention likely kept it trapped for longer.
Viral Video Reached Millions
The incredible footage soon attracted widespread attention after being shared across social media. The US Department of the Interior even reposted the clip, joking, 'We appreciate the enthusiasm for American Energy Dominance, but this isn't what we meant.'
While the light hearted comment drew laughs online, the story later took a far more serious turn. Reports confirmed the bear had been electrocuted before wildlife teams could carry out a rescue operation.
