Could Ariana Grande's new bob be a sign of hair damage? Ariana Grande/Instagram

Ariana Grande's decision to trade her signature long ponytail for a retro-inspired bob has sparked a fresh debate about the condition of her hair. Some fans questioned whether the dramatic cut is a deliberate style transformation or a response to years of chemical processing.

The singer unveiled the shorter brunette hairstyle on Instagram on 22 October, but a Reddit discussion has prompted renewed speculation about possible bleach damage and breakage.

A post shared in the Reddit community on 31 October challenged the description of Grande's new hairstyle as a retro bob, with its author suggesting that the cut reflected how much hair the singer had left. Other commenters discussed its apparently wispy appearance and revisited her history of frequent bleaching and colouring.

Ariana Grande's New Bob

Grande revealed her new hairstyle in a series of Instagram selfies on 22 October. The singer exchanged her familiar long ponytail for a sleek, jaw-grazing brunette bob featuring a deep side part, a glossy chocolate-brown colour, and ends flicked outwards.

Celebrity hairstylist Brandon Pietsch was responsible for the cut and colour. He shared photographs of Grande's transformation on Instagram, adding the caption, 'The ponytail is taking a hiatus.'

The transformation attracted attention from fashion and beauty publications, which described the hairstyle as a retro-inspired bob with a playful, vintage quality. ELLE compared its flipped ends to Betty Boop's distinctive curls, while Vogue highlighted its clean shape, deep side part and chocolate-brown finish.

The look represented a significant change after years of extensions, ponytails and long hairstyles. Grande had maintained much of her hair length even after returning from Glinda's blonde look to brunette, making the new cut particularly noticeable.

For some fans, the bob was a welcome change. Others focused on the apparent condition of the hair, questioning whether the shorter length was related to previous chemical treatments rather than a purely aesthetic decision.

Bleaching Destroyed Her Hair

The speculation has a basis in something Grande publicly disclosed more than a decade ago. In January 2014, the singer addressed criticism about her repeatedly wearing a ponytail in a lengthy social media statement.

At the time, she explained that she had to bleach her hair and dye it red every other week during her first four years playing Cat Valentine on Victorious and Sam & Cat. She said the repeated processing had 'completely destroyed' her hair, leaving her natural strands too broken to comfortably wear down.

Grande also explained that she relied on extensions and wore her hair in a ponytail because wigs and weaves had proved uncomfortable or unsuitable. The singer asked fans to stop criticising her for repeatedly wearing the same hairstyle, explaining that it was the option that worked best for her at the time.

Grande eventually showed fans her natural curls in 2015, offering a glimpse of the hair that had previously remained largely hidden beneath her extensions and signature ponytail.

Being Blonde Caused More Damage?

Another chapter in Grande's hair history began when she was cast as Glinda in the film adaptation of Wicked. To portray the Good Witch, the actress moved away from her natural brunette shade and adopted a pale blonde colour.

The transformation required substantial lightening. In April 2026, professional hair publication Behindthechair published the colour formula used by Grande's colourist, Francesco De Chiara. He explained that the process began with a global bleach treatment to create the bright base needed for the character, followed by toning and nourishing masks.

The published formula included Redken's Blonde Idol Flash Lift Bonder Inside Lightener, with the process lifting Grande's hair to level nine. The colourist emphasised the importance of planning and maintaining hair integrity during the transformation.

Grande maintained the blonde look through much of the Wicked promotional period before beginning her return to brunette in 2025. She previously joked about the difficulty of retaining the darker colour, explaining in an interview with Glamour that her hair was still adjusting and that toner appeared to fade when she washed it.
