GTA 6 protagonists Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval
Lucia gets an Asian makeover, and Reddit responds with racial jokes, criticism, and cosplay talk @rockstargames/Instagram

Lucia Caminos hasn't even made her Grand Theft Auto VI debut, but Reddit is already giving her a makeover. A fan-made image of the game's leading lady as Asian has attracted more than 1,400 upvotes and hundreds of comments, including jokes about her name, ethnicity, and what her life might look like.

Shared on r/GTA6unmoderated under the question 'What if Lucia was Asian?', the edit shows Lucia leaning out of a turquoise car against the neon-lit streets of Vice City. Her black spaghetti-strap top, gold hoop earrings, delicate necklace, and high ponytail remain familiar, while her facial features have been reimagined. The glossy lips and winged eyeliner are still very much on duty too.

The picture itself is a hypothetical redesign, not an official Rockstar Games character update. However, the responses range from creative to racially stereotyped. Some commenters began inventing supposedly Asian-sounding versions of her name, while others questioned why her ethnicity needed changing at all.

Meet 'Lu-Xi-a' and 'Roo-see-aah'

One Reddit user suggested Lucia would instead be called 'Roo-see-aah', while another offered 'Lu-Xi-a'.

A different commenter took the joke further, writing, 'Lu Xia, do you know why you're here? Chinese lessons, I guess.'

The latter appears to play on dialogue from the game's promotional material, replacing Lucia's name and answer with a joke about Chinese identity.

Other reactions leaned into familiar racial stereotypes. One imagined the redesigned character abandoning a criminal lifestyle to study aerospace and nuclear engineering at MIT, while another joked that she would be attending medical school rather than committing grand theft auto. While that may be another Asian stereotype, at least it goes to show that Asians have a reputation for being successful.

Not everyone was amused though. The reactions ranged from sarcasm to racial caricatures, showing how quickly a character edit can become a conversation about identity rather than design.

'Why are yall so f*ckin weird with this sh*t sometimes', one Reddit user asked.

Another responded to the original question with a particularly dry observation: 'Then she'd be Asian. What if she wasn't? Can we figure out that conundrum?'

Why Lucia's Original Identity Matters

In Rockstar's official story, Lucia Caminos is one of two protagonists alongside Jason Duval. GTA VI takes place in Leonida, a fictional American state inspired by Florida, including the Miami-inspired Vice City.

Lucia has spent time in prison after fighting for her family and is determined to build a better life. Together with Jason, she becomes caught up in a criminal conspiracy after a job goes wrong. The game is scheduled for release on 19 November 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Some Reddit users argued that Lucia's Latina identity fits the game's setting, given Miami's prominent Latin American cultural influences.

'Could've been. That's an option. But with so much Latin culture in Miami I think her being Latina just makes more sense', one commenter wrote.

However, another user challenged the idea that a fictional character's background must reflect the largest demographic in a particular location. After all, a story about an Asian woman living in a Miami-inspired city would hardly be impossible.

Fans Find Room for Another Kind of GTA Hero

Beyond the jokes, the discussion also raised questions about Asian representation in open-world games. 'Sleeping Dogs 2', one commenter suggested, referencing the 2012 Hong Kong-set action game starring undercover police officer Wei Shen.

Another wondered whether a future GTA instalment could feature an Asian female protagonist. The conversation even reached cosplay. One Asian fan said she wanted to dress as Lucia but had been warned by a friend that doing so would amount to 'Asian washing'.

Other users pushed back, arguing that dressing as a fictional character does not require sharing that character's ethnicity. After all, society has seen enough of Hollywood bending history, culture, gender, and race. Is 'Asian washing' really that new and negative?

For all the arguments, the fan edit also revealed something rather simple: players enjoy imagining themselves in the worlds they love. Lucia can keep her name, her heritage, and her getaway car. The next generation of gaming heroines has plenty of room for someone new to take the wheel.
