Jennifer Lawrence urged her followers to vote in the US midterm elections after previously expressing concern that her political views could alienate audiences from her films. The Oscar-winning actress shared a photograph of herself giving the three-finger salute associated with Katniss Everdeen, her character in The Hunger Games franchise, on 3 November 2026, the day of the US Midterm Elections.

She posted it on her Instagram Story with the caption, 'Midterms [baby]. Don't forget who burns with us. Go vote.' She also shared a Vote.org link directing users to polling information. Lawrence has approximately 8.7 million Instagram followers.

Lawrence Feared Alienating Film Audiences

Lawrence has previously discussed her reservations about speaking publicly on politics on The New York Times podcast The Interview in November 2025 while promoting Die My Love. She questioned the influence of celebrity endorsements on elections and worried that adding her opinions could intensify political divisions.

'As we've learned, election after election, celebrities do not make a difference whatsoever on who people vote for,' she said. She also described the country as deeply divided and questioned whether her own statements would add fuel to that division.

Lawrence described her thinking as a 'complicated recalibration' because of her work as an artist. 'I want to protect my craft so that you can still get lost in what I'm doing,' she said. She worried that people who disagreed with her political views might turn away from films and performances they would otherwise watch.

Her comments reflected concerns about how political disagreements could affect audiences' engagement with her films, rather than an intention to withdraw from political engagement.

Her Earlier Political Statements

Lawrence criticised Donald Trump after his 2016 presidential election victory. In an essay published after the result, she expressed concern about the rights and safety of people outside the group she described as white men, and encouraged readers to respond politically rather than surrender to fear.

She endorsed Kamala Harris during the 2024 US presidential campaign and spoke in support of reproductive rights. Her producing credits include Bread & Roses, which follows women in Afghanistan under Taliban rule, and Zurawski v. Texas, which examines the impact of abortion restrictions on women seeking medical care.

Her November 2025 remarks did not retract those positions. Instead, she questioned the usefulness of repeatedly discussing politics publicly when audiences might reject her films because of their disagreements with her.

A 'Hunger Games' Reference Ahead Of The Prequel

The three-finger salute became a symbol of solidarity and resistance in The Hunger Games films, in which Katniss becomes the symbol of a rebellion against the authoritarian Capitol. The phrase in Lawrence's Instagram caption references Katniss's speech in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 (2014), delivered after a hospital is bombed in District 8.

In the film, Katniss warns President Snow that the Capitol's violence will provoke resistance, ending with the line: 'If we burn, you burn with us!'

Lawrence will reprise her role as Katniss in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, scheduled for release on 20 November 2026. Josh Hutcherson and Woody Harrelson are also returning to the franchise. The prequel takes place decades before Katniss's original story and follows a younger Haymitch Abernathy, played by Joseph Zada; the returning actors' appearances do not place their original characters in that earlier timeline.
