Kim Kardashian's new biography, Citizen Kim: The Woman Who Created the Future, has drawn attention for its limited discussion of the plastic surgery speculation that has surrounded the reality television star throughout her career. Written by journalist Jonathan Van Meter, the 340-page book examines Kardashian's rise from reality television personality to businesswoman and global celebrity.
However, the biography does not extensively address questions about her famous curves, alleged cosmetic procedures or their influence on contemporary beauty standards. The omission was highlighted in a 27 October review by Allure, which examined how the book approaches Kardashian's appearance and wider influence on beauty culture.
Why the Author Avoided the Subject
Van Meter discussed his decision in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, explaining that he ultimately chose not to explore the speculation surrounding Kardashian's cosmetic history. 'I didn't write about this because it became so weird and complicated,' the author said.
He also maintained that Kardashian had not undergone invasive plastic surgery, describing her breasts, buttocks and nose as natural. His comments reflected his understanding of Kardashian following five years of research and interviews with her, family members, friends, business associates and former partners.
However, Van Meter's account represents the biographer's position rather than independent medical confirmation of Kardashian's cosmetic history. Kardashian has previously discussed aspects of her beauty routine. In her 2022 Allure cover interview, she acknowledged receiving Botox injections but did not disclose undergoing other cosmetic procedures.
Years of Speculation About Her Appearance
Questions about Kardashian's figure have featured in public discussions since the early years of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, which premiered in 2007. The show's first episode included a conversation about her appearance, with her mother, Kris Jenner, commenting on the size of her buttocks.
In 2011, Kardashian addressed claims that she had buttock implants during an episode of the reality series. She underwent an X-ray as part of the segment to respond to the speculation.
However, X-rays cannot reliably rule out every type of cosmetic procedure, including fat transfer, which involves moving fat from one area of the body to another. Although Kardashian has denied undergoing certain surgical procedures, questions about possible enhancements have continued to feature in public discussions about her appearance.
The Book's Beauty Coverage
Citizen Kim explores several aspects of Kardashian's life, including her childhood, relationships, marriages, the 2016 Paris robbery and her family's history. The biography also recounts concerns reportedly raised by her late father, Robert Kardashian, about the attention her figure could attract when she was younger. He is said to have addressed the subject in a letter discussing how others might perceive her appearance.
The book does not extensively examine Kardashian's influence on contemporary beauty standards or the popularity of the hourglass figure associated with her public image. Her business ventures have also established her presence in the beauty and fashion industries. She founded SKIMS in 2019, a brand specialising in shapewear, underwear and clothing, before launching her skincare line, SKKN by Kim.
Kardashian Family's Cosmetic Procedures
Other members of the Kardashian-Jenner family have spoken more openly about their experiences with cosmetic procedures. Kylie Jenner acknowledged receiving lip filler in 2015 and later discussed having much of it dissolved during an episode of The Kardashians in 2024. She also revealed in 2023 that she had undergone breast augmentation at the age of 19. In 2025, Jenner shared further details about the procedure in a TikTok comment, including her breast implant specifications and the surgeon who performed the operation.
Khloé Kardashian confirmed undergoing rhinoplasty in 2021, while Kris Jenner has also spoken publicly about having a facelift. Their disclosures have provided insight into their individual experiences with cosmetic procedures but do not establish whether Kim Kardashian has undergone similar treatments.
