Selma Blair has criticised Javier Bardem for supporting a petition to remove Pink as a UNICEF ambassador, arguing the campaign highlights how quickly artists are targeted for their political views. Bardem supported the petition after Pink criticised rapper Macklemore's pro-Palestinian remarks at an Ed Sheeran concert.
Speaking at the Anti-Defamation League's State of the Arts reception in New York on 1 October, Blair compared the dispute to the professional fallout she faced after making an anti-Islam comment in 2024.

Why Pink Faced Backlash
The dispute began when Macklemore made pro-Palestinian remarks and performed 'Hind's Hall' during Ed Sheeran's Loop tour. In response, Pink reshared a StopAntisemitism post that criticised Macklemore's comments.
The post caused backlash against Pink. She later clarified that she was expressing her own views rather than calling for consequences against Macklemore.
'I have never asked for another artist to be silenced, and I'm not asking now,' she wrote. 'I don't need anyone fired, and I don't need a refund.'
A group called Swifties Against Genocide launched a petition to remove Pink as a UNICEF ambassador, which Bardem later promoted. Pink has served in this role since 2015.
Blair addressed the controversy without naming Bardem directly. 'A couple of weeks ago, of course, a movie star used his platform to push a petition against an artist who has spent more than a decade raising money for children,' she said. 'Her crime was objecting, out loud, when another performer railed against Israel from a stage.'
Blair stated that Pink was simply expressing her views and criticised the 'movie star' for seeking her exclusion. 'This is what it looks like when we lose our humanity,' she said. 'A woman who raises money for children stops being a person and becomes a target, and the people cheering can't see her anymore. They only see a side.'
Blair Recalls Her Fallout
Blair's criticism arose from her experience following widespread condemnation of her February 2024 Instagram comment as anti-Islamic. She later apologised, stating she had 'mistakenly and inadvertently conflated Muslims with Radical Islamists and fundamentalists'.

At the ADL event, Blair described her professional and personal fallout. She detailed the loss of partnerships, her agency, legal and publicity representation, book team, social media manager, and her son's godmother.
'While some friends in the business quietly stood by me, most of them were gone. And of course, my manager, my supposed friend of thirty years, and a Jew, was gone too,' she said.
'I still don't know what any of them were thinking. No one returned my calls. I know the phone stopped. Not rang less. Just stopped.'
She has since returned to work with a smaller, trusted team. However, her 2024 comments continued to draw debate online.
One X user defended Blair at the time, writing, 'She's correct. Islam is an oppressive force that treats women, girls, and non-believers as second-class. (Notice I didn't call it a 'religion')'.
'Her comment is narrowly tailored to specify only a segment of a larger demographic. That's worlds away from you calling for ethnic cleansing of specific American citizens because you don't like the First Amendment,' Another user wrote.
A third user criticised those defending Blair, writing, 'Whoever agrees in this comment is a disgusting Islamophobe. Also Palestine is not a religious fight; Palestinians are Christians and Muslims and Jews.'

'I'm Pointing At The Scale'
Blair compared her experience to the campaign against Pink, observing that Bardem will likely continue his career despite supporting the petition. 'Nothing will happen to him. He'll keep working. He'll keep getting applauded. I made one post, apologised right away, and lost, overnight, everything I'd spent my adult life building,' she said.
'I'm not comparing wounds. I'm pointing at the scale. One direction gets you a petition and a shrug. The other gets you erased. You don't need a law degree to see which way the erasing runs. I don't have one. I noticed anyway.'
At the ADL event, Blair also announced Hineni, a documentary on antisemitism. The film will feature viewpoints from both supporters and critics.
