
A private Snapchat message sent to just three people allegedly set off an extraordinary chain of events that ended with police arriving at a school less than an hour later. A 22-year-old student teacher in Illinois was arrested after Snapchat's artificial intelligence system flagged a message she sent in frustration, automatically alerting the FBI before any of the people in the private group chat reported it.
The incident has reignited debate over digital privacy and AI-powered content moderation, raising uncomfortable questions about what users should expect from supposedly private conversations. Although investigators later concluded the woman did not pose a genuine threat, the arrest, criminal charge and loss of her student teaching placement have become a striking example of how quickly automated technology can have real-world consequences.
Private Message Triggered a Rapid Response
According to the Peoria Journal Star, the student teacher sent the message after a pupil allegedly walked over to her laptop during class and deleted her lesson plan.
Frustrated by the disruption, she sent a Snapchat message to her boyfriend and two roommates asking whether she should 'shoot him', accompanied by a gun emoji. The message was never posted publicly and remained within the private group conversation.
Instead of one of the recipients contacting authorities, Snapchat's AI system reportedly identified the message as a potential threat. The platform forwarded the alert to the FBI's National Threat Operations Centre, which then notified local law enforcement. Deputies arrived at the school within an hour of the message being sent, creating a remarkable timeline from private chat to police intervention.
Police Determined She Was Not a Threat
The woman immediately cooperated with officers and voluntarily handed over her phone during the investigation.
When shown the message, she acknowledged it had been a poor attempt at humour, telling officers, 'Oh yes. Okay. Yeah. I'm realising that was a bad joke. I did not mean it at all, serious at all.'
After reviewing the circumstances, investigators concluded that she did not pose an active threat. School officials reportedly reached the same conclusion.
Despite those findings, prosecutors issued a disorderly conduct charge. She was released from custody the following morning but lost her student teaching placement, demonstrating that even after authorities determined there was no genuine danger, the consequences remained significant.
