Law Roach has spent most of Zendaya's career making sure people look at her. On Tuesday 20 October he said the one outfit he would most like the world to see is the one the public has yet to get. 'Would I have wished that she had been a little bit more public with the wedding,' he said, 'because she was, allegedly, she was one of the most beautiful brides I've ever seen.' His use of 'allegedly' leaves the praise intact while giving away nothing about what he witnessed himself.

Roach, 48, has styled Zendaya since she was 14. He was speaking on the Aspire with Emma Grede podcast, in an episode released on Tuesday.

What he did not do was describe the dress, or settle whether there has been a ceremony to describe it from. Zendaya and Tom Holland, both 30, have never announced a marriage themselves. Holland came closest in June, when a magazine asked whether he had needed to tell relatives the viral fake wedding photographs were not real, and he said there was no need because they had all been there. Reports placed a celebration at a hotel in Surrey in August. No photographs have been released, and no designer has been named.

He Will Not Say, and He Enjoys Not Saying

Roach has turned the withholding into a running joke. 'Like, even with the wedding, like, people are still asking me about the wedding,' he said on the podcast. 'I'm like, as long as you keep asking me about this wedding, you're gonna get a different answer every single time.'

That is not a boast. It is a description of what he has actually done. On a red carpet in March he said the wedding had already happened and that everyone had missed it, and laughed that it was very true.

By September he had reversed it. 'Well, I actually lied. She wasn't married,' he said at the Emmys, adding that the couple had not yet had an official ceremony and that it would come after the Dune press tour. Asked whether he might be lying again, he said he could be.

The contradiction is one he names himself. Zendaya is 'very quiet and very private', he said on the podcast, and he is 'not that'. He is still committed to 'maintaining her privacy'.

Better Than the Fake One

The public descriptions of the gown amount to comparisons with something that was never real. When AI-generated images of a Zendaya wedding circulated earlier this year, complete with an invented dress, Roach was asked about them on a morning television programme on 29 June. 'That dress was not good enough,' he said of the fake. 'Trust me, the dress is better than that.' Asked whether the real gown resembled the AI one in any way, he answered: 'Absolutely not.'

He returned to it in August, in an interview where he called the actual dress 'better than AI'. Between them, those remarks are as close as anyone has come to a description. Better than the fake, and nothing like it. No neckline, no fabric, no house.

He is not commenting from a distance, either. Asked in April last year whether he would be involved in the wedding and the dress, he said that of course he would.

It is an unusual position for a stylist whose job is visibility. Roach has built a career on images that travel, and the look he has praised most warmly this year is the one with no image attached.

The Dress No One Gets to See

None of this is new, which is the part worth noticing. Asked in May last year what Zendaya would wear, Roach gave an answer that still holds.

The couple were trying to be as private as possible, he explained at the time. There would be no magazine spread and no pictures, and the guests would respect that.

'So it will be a really beautiful dress that no one gets to see.'
