Grimes Concert
Canadian singer Grimes has been recently criticised for lending her likeness to an AI film, especially after claims that she doesn't use AI for her songs Philip Nguyen/Wikimedia Commons

Grimes is lending her real voice and an AI-generated likeness to Gods Don't Give Gifts, a dystopian science-fiction anthology reaching cinemas on 4 December and billed by its makers as the first AI-generated feature to get a theatrical release in the United States. She plays a disaffected aristocrat in one of four linked stories set in a world called NiiroCradle, and the film's backers are chasing close to 1,000 screens and an Oscar campaign for best animated feature.

The casting was announced on 5 November and the objections arrived within the hour. 'didnt she make a song against ai like a month ago,' one reply asked on X. 'Chile I thought she was done with the ai shit,' said another, while a third was blunter: 'grimes licensed her face to an ai movie. hollywood finally admitted they dont need actors.' One reader simply wanted to know how much she had been paid, and the answer turns out to be nothing at all.

The Line She Drew

The remark being quoted back at her came in April, in a conversation with the novelist Nnedi Okorafor. 'I actually don't use it in my music,' Grimes said of generative AI, and in the same answer she supplied the exception herself: 'the only AI on the album is in that one song "DeepSeek." Some of the lyrics were written by DeepSeek.'

That is a narrower position than the one she is being held to, and it was never a blanket rejection. It covers her music rather than her visuals, and she has separately described using the technology for visual work. Her contribution to the film is a vocal performance she recorded herself at home, with the face around it generated.

She Was Not Paid for It

The arrangement predates the backlash. The director Zack London, a video creator who works as Gossip Goblin, noticed she followed him and had been replying to his clips, and messaged her in March to offer a part. He says she licensed her likeness for free and waved away a fee, telling him to spend it elsewhere: 'You guys are scrappy, just put that money towards the other actors [and] your film.' Her spokesperson confirmed she took no payment.

There are other actors. Around two dozen people worked on the film, a dozen of them voice actors, alongside foley artists, sound mixers, animators and musicians, a human production effort that sits uneasily beside the makers' description of the thing as fully AI-generated.

A Long Way From 2023

Her willingness to experiment here predates the film by years. In 2023 she told fans they could make songs with her voice and keep half the publishing, and more than 200 Grimes AI tracks were eventually made available to creators. She has also warned about the technology, calling it 'a bigger deal than Jesus' and 'the most dangerous thing that is ever going to happen.'

Grimes declined an interview request. Her spokesperson said she 'appreciates indie artists using new tools to create independent art—especially in the age of big studio monopolies,' and was 'particularly impressed that they had such a large team and were involving and compensating so many artists, voice actors, and musicians.'
